Everywhere you look in the news and media today you see stories about global warming and our effects on the earth.  While it seems to make sense that we should all be a little kinder to Mother Earth, what exactly are some of the benefits of going green?

Our short answer is… just review every page on this site and we think you will see a strong case for the benefits of going green (We are lazy, but not that lazy).  So, since we know you are pressed for time we have compiled our top 5 benefits of going green below.

Going Green Benefit 1: Save the Earth

Pretty obvious huh?  We are not going to spend much time discussing this benefit as it’s the overall point of the going green movement (and this site for that matter), but saving the Earth is the biggest benefit of going green.  While our collective actions have done huge amounts of damage to our planet, it is those same collective actions that can save it. One of our favorite topics about going green is how it can also SAVE you green in the process.  We have a whole section on the site devoted to this topic and will continue to write about ways to save money on your journey to being more green.

Since “Going green while saving green” is a notion that many are just now starting to realize, it is great to see high ranking business folks like Staples CFO John Mahoney stressing the point.

CFO.com has a great write up of Mahoney speaking at the CFO Green Conference in New York where he pointed to some very specific and staggering savings:

In 2008, the company switched from using three-amp lightbulbs to two-amp bulbs. That single change was the key factor in a $6.2 million reduction in energy costs, $4.2 million of which fell to the bottom line after subtracting the costs of running the program. Read the rest of this entry

Keeping on our theme of easy ways to be more green, we wanted to focus on some simple steps you can take of going green in your home.  While much of the attention of going green seems to focus on the car we drive, the food we eat, or chemicals we use to grow our food, one of the largest impacts on our environment is often overlooked…. the place where we live.  In fact, 20% of the energy used every year in the U.S. comes from home heating and cooling (we really seem to like our air conditioning and heating). After reading and posting about the White House Going Green, it got us thinking if other branches of the government were also getting into the act.

I will say that we were a little suprised to find the Pentagon in our search as they are not the image you have when you think of “tree hugging environmentalists” trying to save the earth.   After reading “Pentagon Looks at Green Options“, it definitely made sense and we have a new appreciation of good reasons to “go green”.
