Going Green at the White House

Found a very interesting article today on the Associated Press:  It’s time to green this old (White) House – again

The article discusses many of the things that have been done to make the White House “greener” over the years, focusing on the Carter, Bush, Clinton and now the Obama Administration (Bad pun alert – So would that make it a Green House?)

Apparently, Carter had a failed solar water-heating system, George W. Bush had three solar systems installed, and Clinton launched a “greening the White House” project that saved over $1.4 million dollars in its first six years.

So when Obama came into office talking about the White House getting greener, it was hardly a new thing.  However, we really like Obama’s approach and what he said he wanted to do in this greening effort:

“Part of what I want to do is to show the American people that it’s not that hard,” Obama said in a television interview during the transition. He said he’s one of those people who tiptoes around and turns off lights at night. “I’m not going to be obsessive about it. But I do that in my current house. So there’s no reason why I wouldn’t do it in my next one.”

We were very happy to see that Obama agrees with us!  Going green is all about small, easy steps we can each take to change our habits over time.

The rest of the article goes on to discuss other green changes made at the white house over the years.  A very good read and excellent tidbits and facts to impress your friends.

I love the fact that Obama tiptoes around his house to turn off lights…I do the same thing! I do it in other people’s houses too, which many think is strange ;o)

It’s good to see Obama is pushing going green. Hopefully more of our government officials will follow and do likewise.

I’m like Maureen. I turn off lights that I feel don’t need to be on because it can make a saving over a year and it helps our natural resources.
